The Columbus wrestlers traveled to Traer and put their perfect conference dual record on the line with a pair of conference matchups against North Tama and AGWSR. The premier matchup of the night was at 220 pounds, where #7 ranked Mason Knipp would face off against #8 ranked Aiden Heitland of AGWSR. First blood was drawn early in the first period, as Mason would head to the trainer with a trickle out of both nostrils. That blood was not a hindrance however as Mason was the more aggressive wrestler and imposed his will on his opponent. After a brief scramble situation where both wrestlers were looking to score, Mason completed the takedown.
Mason stayed tough on top and rode out the first period with the 2-0 advantage. Starting the second period down Mason scored a quick reversal. After a questionable exchange, an escape and takedown were awarded even though it appeared that there was never a loss of control. Regardless, Knipp would enjoy a 6-1 advantage at the end of the second period. A third period takedown was enough to Ice the match for Knipp as he would take the 8-3 decision.
After his match Knipp was pleased with his performance. “Well I got punched in the face right in the beginning, but I didn’t let that affect me too much. That kid was pretty good, we got into a couple weird scramble situations there but I was able to stay under control and come out on top, so I’m pretty happy with that."
The Sailors had strong performances up and down the lineup with multiple wrestlers earning falls. Carson Hartz, Henry Erie, Joe Hackett, Gavin Reed, John Hackett, and Max Magayna all winning by fall and giving the Sailors a 53-27 victory.
In the second dual of the evening, Columbus would face the North Tama Redhawks. Coach Boleyn spoke to his team before the dual and stressed the importance of each individual matchup. “We talked beforehand in the locker room about how we needed some of the younger guys to step up tonight, especially in the North Tama dual. We knew based on how we were matching up with them that it was going to come down to our younger guys and how they were able to perform. They were going to be the deciding factor on if we won the dual or not, and they all responded to that challenge. I was extremely pleased with the effort I saw out of them tonight. They came through for us in a big way.”
Joe Hackett stepped up in the 120 pound weight class in a match that on paper appeared to be somewhat of a toss-up, and delivered in a big way. Joe’s first period pin really got the ball rolling for the Sailors. CJ Schuman also came up big in this dual. Building on the momentum for big performances in front of him in the lineup, CJ bounced back from a previous loss on the night and delivered with a first period pin of his own.
Those two matches really cemented the victory for the Sailors and they dispatched the Redhawks 53-27. Columbus leaves tonight’s matchups earning a pair of dual victories and keep the undefeated conference record still intact.
Sailors will next be in action on Saturday, December 10th at the Nashua-Plainfield Varsity and JV Tournaments.
