In the first competition on 2021, the Columbus Sailor wrestlers traveled to take on Sumner Fredericksburg and Aplington Parkersburg Grundy Center in NICL conference action. The Sailors looked to shake off some rust after the extended Christmas break, but came out looking for bonus points. Gavin Reed, Sam Hackett, Max Magayna, Carson Hartz, and Mason Knipp all earning pin fall victories against APGC. The Sailors won the majority of the contested matches, but were unable to make up the difference in the team score, losing the dual by 6 points.
In the second dual of the evening the Sailors knew they would need every team point they could muster in order to compete in the dual. Strong performances up and down the lineup with bonus points in each match, ultimately the Sailors would come up just short in the dual, losing to Sumner Fred by one point.
Coach Boleyn liked what he saw from his team this evening. “ It was great to get back on the mat competing. It is always tough with the long break to get back into the swing of things. I think we had some guys wrestle really tough tonight, and put out a quality performance. We had a couple of tough duals we were hoping to win, ultimately we came up just short, but I was pleased with the fight from the guys tonight.” Coach is also mindful that the season is winding down, and the post season is right around the corner. “We need to dig deeper in the practice room and make sure we are getting better at something each day, improving on our weaknesses. We need to be wrestling at our best when the postseason comes around, and we only have a few days left to improve. We have to go out in the competitions that we have remaining and want to wrestle the best guys out there. We belong in those big matches, and it’s time for everyone to believe that they are supposed to be wrestling the best competition in the biggest matches. We have to go out and wrestle with confidence that we can, and will score points in every position.”
Sailors are back in action on Saturday January 9th at the Tripoli Invitational. Live stream will be available on the Columbus Wrestling Facebook page.
