Magayna Defends Title at Nashua-Plainfield Tournament

The Sailor wrestlers traveled to Nashua for a weekend tournament that has seen the field of teams expand to 16 teams. Varsity and JV would both be in action in split tournaments, 5 JV wrestlers would start the day, and 6 varsity competitors would wrap of a long day in Nashua.

On the mat at 170 pounds, Max Magayna bulldozed his way through the competition to earn his third consecutive Nashua-Plainfield title. He finished all of his matches with first period falls of 38, 51, and 47 seconds. He was simply too much for the competition on this day.

Two other Sailors also reached the finals. Gavin Reed survived an opening match scare, securing a third period takedown to win the match 3-2. In the finals Gavin had a rematch from the state tournament last year as he faced off with Jordan Dusenberry from Wilton. Gavin would drop this match 3-1 and would finish the day taking home second place.

Mason Knipp also reached the finals, entering the day as the 7 seed in a tough bracket. After a razor thin 1-0 victory over the two seed in his opening match, Mason would meet up with a state place winner from last year, Henry Christensen from Ballard. A third period reversal proved to be the difference in this match as the Ballard wrestler was able to take the lead with 15 seconds remaining in the match and was able to hang on for a 4-3 victory. Mason would end the day in second place.

Sailors will next be in action on Thursday, Dec 15 as they travel to Wapsi Valley to take on Wapsi Valley and LaPorte City Union.
