Three Sailor Champions at Redhawk Invitational

Saturday marked the final regular season competition for the Sailor wrestlers. Focus will now shift to post season tournaments and finding a path to the state tournament. An emphasis will need to be placed on getting the Sailor wrestlers healthy and ready for action. A partial squad once again made a Saturday road trip to enter the field in the North Tama Redhawk Invitational with a few guys out of the lineup with illness and injury. 3 Sailor wrestlers brought home championships and the Columbus squad finished the day in 4th place as a team.

At 120 pounds Gavin Reed made quick work of his opponents. He finished the day with 4 pins, 3 of which came in the first period. Gavin put an emphasis on working on his feet. He opened up his matches with quick takedowns, then allowing his opponent back to their feet before ultimately securing the fall.

At 138 pounds, Jonathan Hackett won matches in a variety of ways. He was able to open up the offense in his first match, winning via tech fall. He was able to wrestle smart and grind out a win by decision in his fourth match. And of course he was able to pin his opponents as well, racking up three on the way to his first place finish.

At 145 pounds, Gus Skilling got his first varsity win of the season. After finding himself on his back in the first period, Gus was able to roll through the position and pin his opponent. It may have been his first varsity win, but it was good enough to place him on the podium. With a medical forfeit in his placement match, Gus would take home third place on the day.

At 160 pounds Max Magayna once again refused to get out of the first period. He pinned his way through the 160 pound field once again, finishing each match in the first period. Max finished all 5 of his matches in a combined 4 minutes and 10 seconds of mat time.

The Sailors will return to action Saturday January 29th for the conference tournament hosted by Sumner Fredericksburg.
